Abstract

This paper presents the harmonic characterization of trapezoidal power supply (TPS), which is a high frequency switching power supply system, based on conventional triangulation method. The advent of multilevel inverter topology has brought forth various pulse-width modulation (PWM) schemes as a means to control the switching of the active components in each of the multiple voltage levels in the inverter. In multimedia distribution, hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network dramatically connects optical fiber to the neighborhood with coax cable to the residence. Compared with all-fiber or all-coaxial networks, this network when powered with trapezoidal shaped voltage waveform allows for segmentation of services and high reliability, distribution efficiency, and low cost. The design and control strategy of TPS in order to generate trapezoidal shaped load voltage waveforms has become very attractive. A theoretical analysis which emphasizes a trapezoidal fundamental component and de-emphasizes higher-order harmonics generated by TPS designed based conventional triangulation method is to be conducted. The issue of lower order harmonics and sub-harmonics, which are generated whenever the constant of proportionality is not respected, is seriously emphasized.
